SFF and Parenting

This is, in part, an Agents of Shield reaction post to the Season 2 finale, "S.O.S. part 2." If you desire to be completely spoiler-free, you might wish to watch that first. That said, I don't intend to discuss Agents of SHIELD itself, it's more my own thoughts, influenced by the show, that build on my recent blogposts and other articles I've read and topics I want to write about.

Anne McCaffrey has a series of books about Talented people, telepaths, telekinetics, empaths, healers, etc. There's two major eras in the series. The first era is early in Talent history, with Get Off the UnicornTo Ride PegasusPegasus in Flight, and Pegasus in Space, as Talents are discovered, organized, and trained.

What can we do against such hate?

Yesterday, I commented that everything seems to keep coming back to World War II, and last week I promised to come back to the Children's Museum of Indianapolis' exhibit on The Power of Children. The Children's Museum exhibit has been in place for at least 7 years, with one shutdown to reconfigure the exhibit.

We've gone through it several times when Dear Son (DS) was too young to register what it was about. The exhibit recommends it for children 8 and up, so Spring Break was the first time that DS visited for himself.

The exhibit profiles three children who faced intolerance and hate. Anne Frank, whose World War II diary has become part of the literary canon. Ruby Bridges, who desegregated New Orleans schools as a first-grader. And Ryan White, the Indiana youth who contracted AIDS through his hemophilia medication.

My first Con

During the holiday season, I am re-posting an article from my previous blog.  This post was originally published in August 2010.  However, Brian and I still did not attend GenCon in 2011.

Having geeky family and geeky friends in Indiana, I am all too aware that I missed GenCon this year. Unfortunately, the combination of finances from visiting my Mom and losing income in her final months, and the family schedule, made a trip to Indianapolis in early August unworkable this year. I hope to make it back next year.

Glee, Television, and the A in STEAM

Two years ago in December, my son and I made an emergency "plane, bus, and automobile" trip north to visit my mother after another hospitalization in her battle with cancer.  To get out of town, my brother Sguth gave us a ride to the station.  He had a CD playing, and after a short listen I commented "That's not Journey."

"No, it's Glee."
